There has been alot of news in recent months, ever since E3, from Microsoft about Project Natal. For those who dont know what that means, its the codename for Microsoft’s new motion controlling peripheral, due out sometime next year. When plugged into the current Xbox 360, it allows full control of gaming without the use of a traditional controller. Basically it looks like a whole lot of awesome. The motion of your body is replicated on the screen, and according to Microsoft, it is incredibly accurate, virtually (pardon the pun) 1:1. Take a look at the video below if you still cant wrap your head around the concept.
like I’m not already a game junky.
Now, there has been an insane amount of hype about Natal, and it has been touted as the next generation of gaming. This is reasonable, as it does look like an absolutely awesome time. I personally can’t wait until it comes out.
Sony has been quietly working away at a 3 dimensional firmware update for the Playstation 3, which is ALSO due out sometime next year. It adds 3d playability to all current and upcoming games (obviously with a few exceptions I’d assume). They have demoed their 3d gaming with the media, and the response thus far has been astoundingly positive. It is supposed to be a truly amazing experience.
I’m excited. I mean, really really excited. I have been contemplating whether or not to finally buy a ps3, as I have always been a loyal xbox user, but this announcement (along with the recent price cut) has sealed the deal for me. I will most definately be buying myself a new PS3 Slim in the upcoming months. But, as with all good things in life, there is a catch. In order to utilize the 3d feature, you must have a TV that runs at 200hz (most run at 60hz), and it MUST run a 1080p resolution. So basically, you have to buy a new TV. Along with this rather expensive catch, you also have to wear 3d glasses at all times to enjoy the experience. Is this a deal breaker? no. I need an excuse to buy a new TV. Is it unrealistic? no. havent you been reading? i told you its coming out sometime next year, as a firmware update, for FREE. Is it going to turn me away from my xbox 360? no. The motion controller is just as appealing to me.
See this is why I said I was really really excited at the start of the above paragraph. Because the two videogame giants both have an incredibly contender for next gen gaming coming out sooner than later. You don’t have to choose one or the other, you can look forward to both! As my interest in the majority of current videogames I play dwindles within days (except for Halo 3), you can understand that something totally new and unique to the videogame world is a welcome refreshment. Even the Wii can be a fantastically refreshing alternative to convential gaming, IF you play the right games (see Wii Sports Resort). With Microsoft taking the concept to a whole ‘nother level, and Sony FINALLY bringing 3d to videogaming, 2010 will be an unbelievably exciting turn in the videogaming world. Bring it on.
