Like the idea of hitting zombies with things? Read on…

For anyone who has played Left 4 Dead, I can safely assume you are quite aware that this is a game that doesn’t take itself too seriously. For those that haven’t played it, I should explain. Left 4 Dead was a game released last year by Valve, in which you are part of a 4 man squadron of randoms (An old war veteran type with a beard, a black version of Shaun of the Dead, a hardcore biker looking dude and a random girl), who are the last human beings in a world overrun by zombies. You basically have to fight your way through “scenes”, in which literally hundreds of zombies try to own you, and you are given random guns and explosives to take them out. You have to work as a team (so this game is not conducive to single player play, although it does offer it), and killing the zombies is gleefully violent. Appendages and heads go flying, especially when using the shotgun or the explosives. There is a zombie that vomits all over you, and his vomit attracts other zombies. There is another zombie with a ridiculously long tongue that can lasso you from hundreds of feet away and suck you in then rip you apart. Anyway, I digress.

This is actually a post about the upcoming sequel, appropriately titled Left 4 Dead 2. Valve released the first Left 4 Dead almost as an experiment, to see how customers would react to this simple but incredibly violent co-op zombie fest. Needless to say, it was one of the hottest games out last year for every single platform it was released on (PS3, 360 and PC). So Valve took into account what people loved and didnt love about the first game, and incorporated it into the sequel. Now, amputating zombies is even MORE graphic, and we can expect to see bones and ribs and pieces of skull when we unload on one of the undead. But the most exciting new addition, in my opinion, is the plethora of melee weapons. The idea of beating the living (or unliving) shit out of a zombie with a random household object sounds just great. Now Valve has released the list of melee weapons we can expect in L4D2. And the list of melee weapons is longer than the list of guns in the first one. Amazing.

  • Baseball Bat
  • Cricket Bat
  • Crowbar
  • Electric Guitar
  • Fire Axe
  • Frying Pan
  • Katana
  • Machete
  • Tonfa (police baton)
  • Chainsaw
If hitting an undead bastard in the face with an electric guitar or a frying pan isn’t appealing to you, then you need to take a look at your life, rethink your priorities and seriously contemplate expanding your philosophical horizons.
